Task

A pharmaceutical company approached us with the requirement to fundamentally optimise its existing packaging and palletising processes for bundled folding boxes. The goal was to implement a continuous, process-reliable solution that could flexibly handle both cartons and multiboxes.

The requirement was to integrate all process steps into an as compact a system as possible: from the packing of loose and bundled folding boxes into cartons or multiboxes, to the labelling of the packaging units, and then on to palletising.

In addition to a performance of up to 35 bundles per minute, the customer placed particular importance on gentle product handling, the highest level of process reliability, and complete compliance with all pharmaceutical requirements – including documentation and qualification. Due to limited space, there was also a clear requirement to combine all functions in a space-saving solution.

Our solution

The VePa cell combines all packaging and palletising processes into a compact, high-performance unit, thus enabling optimal use of space. It takes over the packaging of folding boxes into cardboard or plastic crates, including process-reliable, layer-by-layer grouping on a grouping table and the precise insertion of complete layers. Despite its performance, the system only requires a footprint of 4.5 m x 2.5 m.

Furthermore, the system integrates the automatic destacking of plastic crates and lids, lid placement, labelling of boxes or cartons, and subsequent palletising – all within a single cell. With a grouping robot output of up to 35 cycles per minute, it meets the highest efficiency requirements.

Thanks to pharmaceutical-compliant design and appropriate project execution, including documentation and qualification, the VePa cell meets all current standards. Specially developed robotic tools ensure product-gentle handling. Furthermore, the flexible design allows for the simultaneous handling of plastic crates and cardboard boxes in one system – for maximum versatility with minimal space requirements.
