Task

The requirement is for an extremely compact packaging solution for display-ready packaging of blistered meat and cheese products. The oval and round blisters are to be inspected for axis alignment, label, and film print, correctly oriented, and securely stacked in display trays. Furthermore, a reliable quality rejection of non-conforming products, along with robust tray and lid handling, must be achieved within a very limited footprint of only 3.5 × 1.8 m.

Our solution

The robot packaging system shown combines all functions in a highly compact unit. A camera system detects axis alignment, label, and foil print of the blisters, before a 4-axis delta picker aligns the products for display and places them layer by layer into a display tray. Non-conforming products are automatically rejected into a KLT (small load carrier). In parallel, the display tray is erected from a flat blank and fed to the packing station. After being completely filled, the tray is set up by 90° and transported to the lid station. As the blisters stand in the tray like a bouquet, they are securely enclosed by a 4-sided lid tool and the lid is glued together. This allows the lid to be easily and comfortably removed as a slip lid.
